my name is don vito i have a restaurant in downtown indianapolis (VITOS onPENN). With your help through this blog we will be creating the worlds greatest meatball sandwich. through this blog we will be taking suggestions and comments about this self proclaimed worlds greatest meatball sandwich.
Why do we think so highly of this sandwich?
First we start with our own meatball recipe that is a combination of my mothers recipe and some adjustments from a Bobby Flay recipe that we stole from the his throw down on the food network. The flavor that we have achieved is well balanced with a hint of garlic the perfect amount of italin seasoning and another common spice that pulls these two flavors together but is appreciated more if not known by the buds of the taster.
next is the italian bread that will be toasted on the outside but soft on the inside. The inside will be hollowed to give the perfect balance between balls and bread and the bottom of the bread lined with mozarella cheese to insure the sauce ladled on the bread does not make the bread soggy.
five three quarter ounce meatballs will then be lined up in the cheese lined sauce filled bread trough. the tomato sauce is our family recipe that is just sweet enough to perfectly compliment the meatballs. the meatballs are the perfect size for easy eating and 5 allows the sandwich to be cut in half with the middle meatball being dissected for the perfect first bite.
the meatballs will then have the tomato sauce ladled over them and then covered with two thin slices of asiago cheese and baked allowing the asiago to carmelize. The baked sandwich will then be garnished with dill pickle and bread brushed with butter.
